Miyachi Unitek's lasers may be used for either laser marking or laser engraving applications. Though similar, there are differences between the laser marking and laser engraving processes. Laser marking employs a laser to make a mark (text, graphic, bar code, etc.) on an object; the laser mark “appears” when the material on which it is being made is changed by the interaction with laser light. With the exception of the laser mark, the surface of the part being marked remains unchanged. Laser marking systems can make very precise, clean marks on both metals and plastics, at high speeds, making them suitable for most manufacturing processes.

Laser Engraving, on the other hand, is a similar process, which does alter the surface of the part being laser engraved, leaving a mark that can be both seen and felt.
